Confesional: An Exploration of Affect

A physical replication of a catholic confessional that explores the relationship between colonialism and religion. The space with a redesigned interior, an altar of found objects with an accompanying soundscape and cameras that intend to create a sense of familiarity, understanding and belonging for the brown audience.

Religious iconographies are used to represent the racial mixing within the Caribbean as well as acknowledging the beauty of devotion and the coalescence of religion and latinidad. The interior is inspired by the living room, more specifically a grandmother’s plastic covered floral print sofa. Live footage of the interior is projected outside of the confessional on display with the process book.
